The Former Sudetenland and My Next Novel

I’ve been reading lots of history books about WWII and lots of novels set during that time period. It was a horrific time, and lots of people suffered tremendously. I didn’t realize how little I really knew about how the war had started until I read those books.

I’ve been taking notes and thinking about what it must have been like for the innocent victims on all sides, even some of the soldiers who were forced to fight when they didn’t believe in the Nazi agenda.

In my book I hope to make people think. I want to show the moral conflicts and decisions that people had to endure, on all sides. I want to show that everyone makes right and wrong choices, and everyone has regrets over something.

Usually, when I start work on a new novel, I have all the names of characters right away, and I don’t have an outline or story plotted out. This time, it’s the other way around. I haven’t named my characters yet, but I have a fairly detailed plot outline.

I’m still researching, and will probably continue researching while I’m writing the book. I think I’ll start writing this week. Wish me luck! This one will be tough and emotional, but I’m eager to write it.

  • Hi Susan, good luck.....it's a fascinating period and plenty of lessons to be learned. Look forward to reading your work. I have a WIP about a Jewish woman who is working as a mathematician in 1933 as the Nazis come to power. The research is difficult to read sometimes but I'm sticking with it. Good luck with your project and keep it up. Adam
